Sports Information Director Block Named to National Hall of Fame
MESA, AZ - Mesa Sports Information Director, Wayne Block, has been selected to the Hall of Fame of the College Sports Information Directors of America it was announced Wednesday.
Block, a native of New York City, joined the Mesa Athletic Department in July of 2011 after retiring from a 35-year career as an SID in 2010. The last 27 years came at Christopher Newport University, an NCAA Division III school in Virginia.
He also spent four years as the first full-time assistant SID at Virginia Tech in the early 1970s and began his career at two colleges in New York State.
He is currently a member of the Christopher Newport Athletic Hall of Fame, as well as the Hall of Fame of the USA South Athletic Conference, of which CNU was a member and which Block served as SID for 18 years.
After a year of retirement, he decided to jump back into the profession and contacted junior colleges around the Phoenix area to see if any could use his services.
At Mesa he has instituted internet broadcasts of many sports, upgraded the school's website and begun several other new programs for athletics.
He will be formally inducted into the Hall of Fame at the organization's national convention on June 9 in Orlando, Fla.
