On Monday, October 26 Mesa Baseball didn't use their gloves.
They didn't use their bats.
They didn't even use their Head Coaches' 15-plus years of head coaching knowledge.
Instead, they used their hearts.
Players, coaches, and parents teamed up for a call to civic duty. The team served at a car wash to support Phoenix Children's Hospital at Desert Ridge Marketplace from noon to four p.m. The event will be taking place all week long in an effort to raise money for the hospital.
"It is always a great feeling when you do something out of genuine care for others," says Mesa's Skipper Tony Cirelli.
As synonomous to Mesa Baseball as America is to apple pie, Coach Cirelli instills in his players the bigger picture and the family notion that has permeated in Mesa Baseball since the days of Brock and Frye and the string of three straight National Titles in the early 70's.
Mesa only has an interest for players willing to give of themselves for the good of the team. If it means pitching in with community service efforts like a car wash to support Children's Hospital, all players best be ready to get the job done.
KPHO TV-5 (CBS) was on hand to catch some videotape of the event and Mesa Baseball was right in the middle of the charity affair.
Mesa is in the midst of their Fall Ball schedule, but took time out to cater to the more important things in life.
Coaches Sean Kenney, Tom Novak, and Doug Rose also took part in the event along with the players and some parents.
This is just a part of the ongoing engagement all Mesa coaches and players are immersing their teams in as part of a bigger picture, a call to civic action and duty.
Being a Mesa Thunderbird athlete is a proud honor and one not to be taken lightly. There are many efforts yet to set forth, and as long as Mesa Athletes are around, you can bet they will be involved on some level.
