A great race at nationals can be a fitting way to end a season or even cap a career as a Thunderbird. It can also be a stepping stone to opportunities to compete at four year educational institutions. As another cross country season draws to a close we take a look at four runners who continue to do Mesa proud while racing for schools from all over the country.
An appearance at the NCAA Championships with ASU was not only a dream come true for Hailey Hanna, but also the end of an injury nightmare. "The season started off to a rocky start with having to take a little time off for a pretty severe case of plantar fasciitis, but once I got back into the swing of things again my season kind of took off from there. My coach and team are great, I'm happy with my recent performances, and most of all grateful to not be on crutches like year." Hanna ran a satisfying 41 second personal record (21:33 for 6K) at the PAC-12 Championship and a strong 22:17 at nationals in Indiana.
New York City is the backdrop for Samantha Meyerhoff's runs these days. Samantha was the top finisher for the St John's University in the past two years and considers her race at the Big East Championships the highlight of the current season. She now looks forward to track season where she hopes to impress once again in the steeplechase.
When Justin Royer graduated from MCC two years ago he headed to Brigham Young University Hawaii. This year, Justin captained his team, was named to the all-conference team and set the fourth fastest time ever for his school with a 32:47 for 10K. "Doctor" Royer's love of running science is legendary at MCC and he is currently studying to become a physical therapist.
The University of North Texas is now home for Ingrid Mollinkopf. She was Mesa's number one cross country runner three years ago taking many awards as a T-Bird. Different setting today, but "Ling" continues to lead the way, helping her Mean Green team to second place at the Sun Belt Conference Championships. Law school is next on the agenda for Mollenkopf after a stellar LSAT score.
