JC Winners: Carlos Roa and Taylor Stewart

Thunderbird Classic
Crossroads Park, Gilbert
Oct. 20th, 2011

The Thunderbird Classic moved to Crossroads Park in Gilbert this year, and the new location quickly won many fans. The course featured a combination of grass and desert trail as it meandered over some gently rolling hills, impressing competitors, coaches and spectators alike.

For Mesa runners the meet provided an opportunity to run some fast times and preview the course that will also be used for the Region I Championships on November 1st. Both the men's and women's races were won by strong, unattached runners who have continued to improve since graduating from college. Ex-Central Arizona athlete, John Harmon took the men's race from US international runner Alex Mason. However, Mesa's Carlos Roa had a lot to be pleased about finishing as top Junior College runner in a lifetime best of 26:05.

Another veteran standout, Priscilla Schultz retained her Thunderbird Classic title running an impressive 17:55 on the 5 kilometre course. The most exciting battle of the day concluded 70 seconds later when MCC's Taylor Stewart outkicked Kelsey Montano of Pima to take second place to the cheers of the home crowd.
