Grand Canyon University
Estrella Mountain Park

Fall finally arrived in AZ this week and the lower temperatures were reflected in the fast times at the Grand Canyon Meet. A number of MCC runners ran lifetime bests on a rolling course in the shadow of the Estrella Mountains.
In a field that included competitors from University of Arizona and Arizona State, Mesa's Taylor Stewart ran a strong race to take the Junior College first place award. Stewart was ably supported by Kirsten Behla, Melody Courtney and Cristal Castro, but perhaps the happiest T-Bird of the day was Mariah Krolak. "Mariah has battled gamely through pain and injury just to be here today," enthused coach, Eamonn Condon. "That was a promising start, now she can get back to racing like we know she can."
In the men's 8K, Carlos Roa continued his return to peak fitness with a solid performance. Eddie Martinez was MCC's second finisher once again and this time he was buoyed by a much improved finishing time of 26min's, 43sec's. On a day of huge improvements, the most impressive gain came from Red Mountain High's, Brent Sewell. Perennial Mesa rivals, Pima College provided the motivation for Sewell. "I just wanted to pass as many of those Pima shirts as I could," explained Sewell "and that kept me going all the way to the finish."
