Coach Latimore and staff kick off 2010 campaign

Perhaps the busiest time of any season is the beginning.  Expectations are high, student-athletes are anxious, equipment managers like Mike Lavella are on a hectic schedule, as are administrators within the department.  Lucky for Lavella, he's had some help in the way of volunteer equipment expert Ty Ketterling, on loan from the Arizona Rattlers.

The 2010 Mesa Thunderbird football season kicks off against arch-rival Scottsdale on Saturday, September 4 at 7:00 p.m. at John D. Riggs Stadium.

Coaches Denver Latimore, Ron Daugherty, Tony McClain, Kwamie Lassiter, Justin McDonald, Bob Harvey, Jacob Reid, Michael Bankston, Rob Fredrickson, Jesse Lopez, and Sam Elliott have been working tirelessly to ready their athletes for action.

The field has been coddled with irrigation and non-use throughout the month of July to ensure it would be in top shape as hundreds of gridiron warriors trample the grass as WSFL action gets underway for the Mesa Thunderbirds once again.

Athletic Trainers Bob Klassen and Kara Cummins have spent endless hours nurturing the players from tapings to massages to icings to stressing the importance of properly hydrating themselves in these torrid summer days.

All of this preparation culminates upon kickoff and the reality of a new season begins.

Athletic Director John Mulhern has fostered a positive culture in his first six months as he has attended numerous contests and practices, familiarizing himself with his student-athletes and coaches.

"I just want our athletes to be good students and represent our community well," says Mulhern.

All the hard work and preparation can be seen at John D. Riggs Stadium Saturday night, September 4 at 7:00 p.m.

The game will be broadcasted live on KWSS, 106.7 FM by Mesa play-by-play commentator Michael Carotenuto and KWSS on-air personality, Kevin Gassman.

For those that cannot make it to John D. Riggs Stadium on Saturday night, click here to be taken to KWSS 106.7 FM for a live online broadcast of the Mesa Thunderbirds versus the Scottsdale Artichokes at 7:00 p.m., Saturday, September 4.
