Men's Golf Wins Region I Championship

Men's golf Region I champions 2014

  GOLD CANYON, AZ - Leading from wire to wire, the Mesa men's golf team captured its second Region I, Division II golf championship in four years, and third since 2008, Saturday at the Gold Canyon G.C., earning a spot in the NJCAA National Championship next month.

  The T-Birds posted a final-round 305 to finish with an 1178 total, ten shots better than Glendale which had an 1188 and 15 over two-time defending national champion South Mountain at 1193.

  Ryan Witte (So., Phoenix, AZ/Desert Vista H.S.) claimed second place individually with a 76-292. He was followed by Austin Fletcher (Fr., Memphis, Tenn/Mountain Pointe (AZ) H.S.) at 79-295.

  Jacob Montplaisir (So., Gilbert, AZ/Dobson H.S.) closed at 81-304, Justin Hyden (So., Phoenix, AZ/Mountain Pointe H.S.) shot a 77-304 and Ben Potter (So., Phoenix, AZ/Mountain Pointe H.S.) had a 73-305.

  "Our saying for the week was to 'win the day' and we were fortunate to win three," said head coach John Guerrero. "I'm very proud of the men and we're looking forward to Indiana in our quest for a national championship."

  MCC will travel to Plymouth, Ind., for the NJCAA even from May 20-23.
