Men Off To Good Start With 5-0 Blanking Of Cougars

Coach Drew talks with Miguel Romero during the team's win at SMCC on August 25

Mesa Men's Soccer won most of the 50/50 balls, played tremendous defense, and moved the ball effectively in their offensive third en route to their season-opening win on Thursday, August 25 at South Mountain, 5-0.

"I'm pleased with the way we played.  There are some things that I'd like to see done with more fluidity, but for a first game, I am happy," says Coach Drew.

Abel Corral got things going for Mesa in the 19th minute as he received a beautiful one-time from Brendan Ryan and bombed it into the net for the early MCC lead.

In the 49th minute, Josh Zavala capitalized on another nifty assist from Ryan, and Mesa led 2-0.

Miguel Romero would score Mesa's third goal on a ball from Jesse Eyman.  The sophomore out of Ironwood HS has been working hard on his offensive game all off-season and it showed in the first game for his T'Birds in 2011.

The T'Birds were the beneficiary of an own-goal for the fourth tally as time wound towards the final water break, and Mesa was comfortably ahead, 4-0.

The final Mesa mark would come off the foot of Heber Sanchez on a remarkable set corner kick played in from Taylor Hough.

With three points for Mesa and a number in the left column of the won-loss record, Mesa can prepare for a formidable opponent in Pima on Saturday.

The match against the Aztecs kicks off at 7:00 p.m. as the ladies take the field at 4:30 p.m.
