Paradise Valley Indoor Invitational
1/27-1/28/2012
When Pau Tonnesen pulled on his track shoes on Friday morning he was a little nervous about his first heptathlon event ever. By Saturday afternoon, his earlier fears had disappeared as he posted a nation leading score of 4643 points in the seven event competition. Tonnesen was quick to share the credit for his success with his coach, admitting, "this (my success in the heptathlon) is why I listen to advice and don't coach myself."
Susan Pew took first place in the pole vault, clearing 3.50 meters. Pew is following in the footsteps of big sister, Lauren who took a silver medal at the 2009 National Indoor Championships for MCC.
Returning Mesa thrower, Gerard Ingallina's third place effort in the shot putt was good enough to secure a place at Indoor Nationals in Eastern Illinois. The event was won by MCC graduate, Joe Riccio. Meanwhile, on the track, four Mesa runners qualified for the 600m in Illinois and later formed the backbone of a 4x400m relay team that also booked a ticket to Nationals.
