Mesa Women Shoot for National Title
PEORIA, Ill. - The team that eliminated the Mesa women from last year's NJCAA Division II Women's Basketball National Championship Tournament, Louisburg (NC), is the one that stands in the way of the Thunderbirds' first national championship.
The two will meet at 5:30 p.m. Arizona time to battle for this year's national crown. Mesa will be seeking its 17th national championship, but first ever in women's basketball.
Louisburg edged MCC a year ago, 65-63, The Hurricanes are the No. 2 seed. Mesa is, of course, the top seed.
The Hurricanes, 32-3, got past the host team, Illinois Central, 72-65, yesterday, while the Thunderbirds eliminated No. 4 seed, St. Clair County (Mich.), 64-54.
The two teams have played one common opponent, Monroe. The T-Birds ousted the two-time defending national champions in the quarter-finals of this year's event, 53-50, while LC won a regular-season contest on the road, 76-66.
The Hurricanes are led by 5-7 sophomore Olivia Gaines who averages 18.6 points per game. Justin Taylor, a 5-8 sophomore adds 15.5 per contest while Jazmine Parker, a 5-8 sophomore has an 11.3 scoring mark. Latrice Phelps, a 6-0 sophomore, is the top rebounder with 7.2 per game.
