Soccer Update, Men Lose Two Straight Heartbreakers, Women Notch A Tie

Women's Soccer In Action versus Pima 090409

Teams Looking Strong As Season Hits Stride

Coaches Andrew Guarneri, Paul Manoogian, and David Belfort are seeing many good things as the 2009 season starts to pick up steam.

In recent matches, the men played perennial powerhouse Yavapai on the road Monday, September 7, 1-0.  The game was a showcase for where Mesa has come in men's soccer in one short season.  The team fought toe-to-toe with one of the nation's best.

The ladies have notched one tie on the season but have yet to break into the win column.  That will surely change soon.   The ladies tied at Glendale on Wednesday, September 9.  The game went into two overtimes and ended 2-2.

"I like the way we're playing, we're just struggling to find results," says Guarneri.

The men lost a tough one last night, 2-1 and Coach Guarneri knows his team had to deal with more adversity than necessary.  The men's record now stands at 2-3 and the women are 0-2-1.

Both teams play Saturday at home in John D. Riggs Stadium against Paradise Valley.  The women's game begins at 4:30 p.m. and the men will follow at 7:00 p.m.
